Basil is commonly known as a low-growing herb that belongs to warm and tropical climates. This herb has been cultivated for more than 5,000 year and is originally native from Iran, India and other tropical countries of Asia.
Whether you are a lover of gambling, spring is great season of the year for start a seed project. My recent gardening project is usually starting a few herbs in pots and placing them on a sunny windowsill. Of all the Bail varieties, “Medinette Basil” is one of my favorites because it is so easy to grow.
I would like to share with some existent varieties of Basil.
- 1. The Medinette Basil. This is a very small type with leaves a bit larger than bush basil which makes it perfect for planting in pots. Medinette Basil can only reach 12 to 14 inches. It germinate very easy and also can be planted indoor at any time of the year but if you are planning do it outside is recommended planted in mid to late spring.
- 2. The Sweet Salad Basil. This is a medium leaf variety wonderful for use in some foods and salads such as tomatoes, pestos and in soups. Because of its flavor and attributes the sweet salad basil is the most widely used commercially.
- 3. The Genovese Basil. Its name is because it is a classic large leafed type, native from “Genoa” in Italy. The Genovese Basil is often used fresh or frozen in diverse kind of salads and pesto butter.
- 4. The Gecofure Basil. The name of this basil comes from a contraction of Genovese Compatto Fusarium Resistant (Gecofure). According to its characteristics, the Gecofure Basil is very resistant to diseases and has great flavor and exquisite aroma.
- 5. The Marseilles Basil. This basil only grows a maximum of 10 inches making it a perfect option for pots or a great border plant for any kind of garden.
- 6. The Spicy Global Basil. It is a colorful form of bush basil. It has slightly larger leaves than most and grows in uniform round little bushes. The Spicy Global Basil is often a bit hardier than many bush species making it a good choice for potted plant sales.
- 7. The Indian Basil. It has purple flowers and green foliage. Often grows to a height of around 3 feet. The see is very popular inn India for make milkshake and a type of beverage called falooda. Also the Indian Basil is has some medical uses as a treatment against intestinal worms and coughs. Furthermore it has a religious relation to all Muslims because the emperor Aurangzeb said that this basil should be planted on his tomb.
- 8. The Oriental Breeze Basil. When this basil is planted in pots can reaches up to 16 inches but in the garden could even duplicate this size and its flowers commonly appear from June to September. Also, this basil has very bright green leaves and big purple flower heads.
