Although ants are unwanted pets in one’s home, it is not always safe to use harmful pesticides. It can be more damaging than you think.
It is an amazing fact that ants can indeed bear weight which is fifty times larger than their own, but if they are any larger than they are now, perhaps it will be easy for humans to get overwhelmed.
Nonetheless, it is a clear fact that ants are diminutive in size and humans are a thousand times bigger. This means that controlling ants are always possible.
The following are a few tips in controlling ants without having to resort to harmful pesticides and chemicals.

Looking for the Ant Nest
The best means to destroy ants totally would have to begin at the source. An entire colony cannot exist without the queen. Once you are able to get rid of the nest and the queen, destroying the rest will be simpler.
You need to be wary about any holes around the house or in the backyard, which could serve as the entry points of ants. Once you discover the nest, it will be easy controlling the ants, using any of these mixtures, passed through the entry holes.

  • Use apple cider vinegar and empty it through the holes
  • You can also use hot tea, made using strong peppers, cut finely and blended with hot water
  • You can also persistently introduce a torrent of water into the ant nest. If the queen remains alive, this will prompt her to find another area for the colony
  • You can also make natural pesticides such as mixtures of tansy, sage, peppermint, and catmint
  • Blend together sugar and baking soda, in equal measurements, and pour the mixture into the nest or in any ant-prone locations

Making an Ant Wall

  • If you are still unable to find the nest, you can try erecting walls or barriers between you and the ants
  • Certain plants repel ants. You can use the leaves and flowers where the ants normally remain and try to fend the ants off with such barriers
  • A mixture of vinegar and water or lemon juice and water can help make a wall between your home and the ants
  • Moreover, talcum powder and chalk dust, as well as diatomaceous earth are excellent ant barricades
  • As for any cracks in your home, you need to caulk these cracks effectively, in order to discourage an enterprising army of ants from entering your home

Keeping Ants at Bay
After you successfully topple the ant nest, it is important that the ants never return anymore. These ways will help keep the ants at bay:

  • First you need to blend four ounces of peanut butter, sugar, and boric acid each. Although boric acid is in itself a chemical, it is still less damaging for humans and the environment than most pesticides. You can keep this solution in safe place, and use it from time to time to manage ant infestations
  • One of the valuable yet safe to use commercial products nowadays is Orange Guard. This solution kills ants almost immediately. Due to the fact that it is not toxic, it is even safe to use in kitchens and picnic areas
  • Use your garden to plant some ant-repelling herbs. These include pennyroyal, peppermint, catnip, sage, and peppermint.
  • One of the organic repellents is Tansy, particularly ideal for ants which are keen to feast on sugar. However, since Tansy is harmful to animals you should never use it where there is livestock
  • Ground cinnamon is also a perfect ant-repellent. You can just sprinkle it in areas hunted by ants. If you have oils with cinnamon, you can also use these, too
  • If basil has the power to destroy flies, catnip is perfect for ants. A little catnip sprinkling goes a long way.
  • You can create your own blend of 2/3 cup water, 3 tablespoons dish soap, and 1/3 cup vinegar. This spray will come in handy anytime
