While creating a non profit organization is not very difficult in itself, there are many things one must keep in mind when one has decided to build one.

Here are some things to keep in mind when attempting to create a non profit organization:

* Do as much research as you can and use the right sources that you know are reliable. Keep in mind that a non profit organization is not interested in making money for itself, but rather funding capital for a specific interest to the general public.

* Not all non profit organizations are tax exempt. Furthermore, the ones that are, are bound by certain stipulations in their workings.

* The creation of a mission statement is essential for a sturdy non profit organization to succeed. Keep it simple so that anybody who reads it will understand what you’re intentions are and how you plan on accomplishing them.

* Create a Board of Directors containing people who are for your mission and know exactly what you are looking to accomplish with this organization.

Articles of Incorporation:

In order to prevent legal liabilities in your corporation, you’re going to want to fill these articles of incorporation. If any questions arise, do consult with your attorney.

* Bylaws, which are more or less the rules of their operations, are required by every organization. Not to say that they’re a necessity, but they will help keep everyone on the same page as far as knowing what the organization is and what it is for.

* Outline a beginning budget for your organization. Figure out what you have for opening costs, how you can meet them, and what you want your money to do for the organization. Make sure you plan out future expenses as well.

* Come up with a good, easy-to-follow record keeping system. Save every document that is required by law as well as minutes and statements of any council meetings.

* Get a bank account set up for the organization and figure out an accounting system suitable for your corporation.

Financial literacy is crucial in this portion of the game.

* The next step will require you getting your EIN, whether or not you are taking in employees or not. This can be done through the internet.

* File for your 501 status. In order to be tax exempt, you must get the 1023 form along with the instructional booklet from the IRS’ website or office.

* File for state and local and federal tax exemption.
